Axum, also known as Aksum, is a city located in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and has a fascinating history.

Axum was the capital of the Aksumite Empire, which thrived between the 1st and 7th centuries CE. It was a powerful kingdom that controlled a significant portion of the region’s trade and was known for its wealth and prosperity.

One of the most iconic sites in Axum is the obelisks, which are enormous stone monoliths erected to commemorate the Axumite rulers. Some of these obelisks were transported to Italy in the 19th century, but many still remain on-site, serving as an impressive testament to the city’s past grandeur.

Axum is also home to the Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion, which is considered one of Ethiopia’s most sacred churches. According to tradition, the Ark of the Covenant, which is said to contain the Tablets of the Law, is kept there.
