The Karo tribe is an indigenous community located in the Omo Valley, a region in southwestern Ethiopia. Renowned for their unique culture and distinctive artistic practices, the Karo are primarily subsistence farmers, relying on agriculture for their survival. Their agricultural practices mainly focus on the cultivation of sorghum, maize, tobacco, and beans. Additionally, livestock rearing, particularly goats and cattle, holds significant importance within their way of life.
The Karo tribe stands out for their passion for body painting. Tribe members use natural pigments to create geometric patterns and intricate designs on their bodies and faces. These body paintings hold great cultural significance, allowing the Karo to express their identity and differentiate themselves from other tribes in the region.
Furthermore, the Karo also practice the bull jumping ceremony, similar to the Hammer tribe. This event takes place annually or every two years and brings together all the young adults in the village who are ready for marriage. The ceremony is organized in the main Karo village called Dus.
