12 DAY PROGRAM TO HISTORIC SITES

VISIT THE MAIN HISTORIC SITES AND THE SIMIEN MOUNTAIN.

12 DAYS

In the morning, visit the African capital town of Addis ababa. Addis is found 2400m above the sea level, Visit National museum where Lucy lives and Entoto mountain where the ancient Menelik palace is found . After lunch, take flight to Bahir dar. Overnight in Bahir Dar (hotel).  

In the morning, take a boat trip on Lake Tana to the sacred Zege Penninsula. and visit two monasteries , Betre Maryam, Ura Kidane Mehret and the outlet of the Blue Nile River.  In the afternoon, drive out to the Blue Nile Falls for a short hike in the area. Overnight in Bahir Dar (hotel).

After breakfast, drive 3hrs to the 16th capital town of Gondar. offers wonderful Royal Enclosure ( Fasil Gebi ) , with six castles and several other buildings.  Additionally, visit Fasilidas’s Pool, still used for Timket celebrations and Debre Birhan Selassie ,the most famous church by mural and ceiling painting in Ethiopia.  Overnight in Gondar (hotel).

Early in the morning depart from Gondar to the Simien Mountains. hiking around three hours inside the park , you will see a large waterfall and also admire the endemic gelada baboon, also known as the ‘bleeding heart baboon’ due to the red skin on its chest. Drive back to town debark. Overnight Debark (hotel).

After breakfast, drive to Axum, enjoying spectacular views of the Simien Mountains.  After stopping for lunch in Adi Arkay, proceed driving through the dramatic Tekeze Valley, offering one of the best landscapes in the country.  continue to Axum, home of the ancient Axumite Empire, and the capital town of qQueen of Sheba.  Overnight in Axum (hotel).

A full day visite of Axum, including the famous obelisks (one that was recently erected after being returned from Italy) and the archeological museum, the Queen of Sheba’s Bath , Ezana’s inscription, King Kaleb’s and Gebre Meskel tombs and the Queen of Sheba’s Palace.  You can also visit the St. Mary of Zion church, where the Ark of the Covenant is kept.  Men only are allowed to enter the old church. Overnight Axum (hotel).

After breakfast, drive to visit the ruins Temple of Yeha, dating 7th centuries BC, and thought to be the capital of Ethiopian civilization before Axum.  Afterwards, visit either Debre Damo monastery ,sorry( women’s not allowed ). Have to climb up a 15-m rope to enter, or visit another rock-hewn church of Medhane Alem Adi Kesho.  Overnight in Hawsein (hotel or lodge).

In the morning, depending on your physical fitness visite either Abuna Yemata Guh or Maryam Korkor. Both churches found on the top of the mountain with an amazing views but not easily accessible. After lunch, continue your visit with the more easily-accessible churches of Abreha we Atsbeha or Chirkos.  Afterwards, proceed driving to Mekele for overnight (hotel).

Early in the morning, it will take full day Drive from Mekele to Lalibela.  stop on the way you to visit Amhara villages, lunch and continue the journey to Lalibela.  Overnight in Lalibela (hotel).

The whole day is dedicated to visite the 13th rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, it is classified as the eight wonder of the world. In the morning time ,visite the Northwestern Cluster of churches – Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael & Bet Golgotha (entry not permitted for women).  After lunch, continue with the Southeastern Cluster of churches – Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanual, and Bet Abba Libanos.  Finally, you will visit the most famous of all the churches – Bet Giyorgis, constructed in honor of the patron saint of Ethiopia – Saint George.  Overnight in Lalibela (hotel).

After breakfast, proceed driving to Dessie via Woldia.  On the way you will stop for a rest in Hayk where you can enjoy the views of this amazing lake, visit the monastery (open for men only) and enjoy the birdlife.  Overnight in Dessie (hotel)

drive back to Addis via Debre Birhan.  On the way you pass the Mezezo Escarpment, with a good chance to see the endemic gelada baboons.  If the day is Sunday, you can stop to visite the colorful senbete market including the interesting camel market.
